Project Details

This was a branding & corporate design project for an online travel service website promoting travel packages for city tours around Berlin. The process involved creating a cohesive and compelling visual identity that communicates the brand's values to attract potential customers. This process included defining a brand strategy that outlines the brand’s mission and fits Berlin's cityscape and reputation as a creative and chaotic city. The next step was to design a logo, select a color palette, and choose typography that resonates with the brand's identity and appeals to the audience. The website’s layout must be user-friendly and visually appealing, ensuring an intuitive navigation experience. Incorporating high-quality images and engaging content was essential to evoke a sense of adventure and trust.

Subsequently, the design culminated in its implementation via Figma as creative page mockups and prototypes.

EMPATHY

Redesigning a previous website to meet the target audience's expectations

In the empathy stage of the design process for redesigning a travel website offering pre-made travel packages for Berlin, the focus was on deeply understanding the target audience and their emotional connection to the city. The previous website, which looked boring, pale, and unappealing, failed to capture the vibrant essence of Berlin. To address this, I immersed myself in the cultural and artistic pulse of the city, recognizing Berlin's reputation as a creative and chaotic metropolis. By engaging with potential users, I discovered their desire for a travel experience that reflected Berlin's unique spirit.

I delved deep into understanding the heart and soul of Berlin, as well as the needs and desires of the target audience. I explored Berlin’s rich cultural landscape, renowned for its creativity, dynamic street art, and historical significance. Conversations with potential users revealed their longing for a travel experience that mirrored Berlin’s energetic and eclectic vibe. Armed with these insights, I aimed to craft a design that would not only attract users but also evoke the emotional essence of Berlin.

This empathetic approach led to the incorporation of dynamic elements such as paint splashes and graffiti icons, infusing the website with a stunning visual appeal that resonates with Berlin's lively and edgy character. By aligning the design with the users' expectations and emotions, I created a more engaging and authentic online presence. This transformation not only made the website visually striking but also established a deeper connection with users, ultimately enhancing their overall experience and satisfaction. Through empathy, I ensured that the design truly reflected the vibrant soul of Berlin, making the travel packages more appealing and accessible.

DEFINE THE PROBLEM

The Challenge - from Sterile to Stunning

When I first encountered the Berlin travel website, it was clear that a significant transformation was needed. The site was marred by a dull, pale aesthetic dominated by uninspired grey tones, random color choices, and a lack of cohesive design elements. The name of the website "Criartim" failed to resonate with its audience, providing no clear message or sense of connection to Berlin or traveling in general. Icons were inconsistently used, and elements were poorly aligned, contributing to a sterile and hastily constructed appearance. This unattractive design not only failed to capture the vibrant spirit of Berlin but also made navigating and engaging with the site a frustrating experience for users.

IDEATE A DESIGN - the Transformation

A Vibrant, Cohesive Design

Inspired by Berlin's reputation as a hub of creativity and chaos, I reimagined the website with a striking visual language that utilized elements of paint splashes and graffiti icons. This bold aesthetic choice was designed to capture the city’s edgy, artistic spirit. I replaced the uninspiring grey palette with vibrant colors that reflect Berlin’s lively streets, ensuring that each hue was thoughtfully selected to harmonize with the overall design.

I also introduced a new name for the website - "CityVentura", one that conveyed meaning and instantly connected with the audience, encapsulating the essence of the website as a travel service for various cities. Icons were standardized and consistently applied, enhancing usability and creating a unified visual language. Careful attention was paid to alignment and spacing, bringing structure and order to the design while maintaining the creative chaos that defines Berlin.

Typography

I carefully selected typography that embodies a playful and dynamic character, perfectly fitting the city's vibrant and eclectic reputation. I chose a font that blends modern, clean lines with quirky, unexpected elements, reflecting Berlin's unique mix of history and contemporary culture. This playful typeface not only enhances readability but also adds a touch of personality to the website, engaging users and making their browsing experience more enjoyable. By incorporating this lively typography, I aimed to capture the essence of Berlin's creative spirit and ensure that every textual element on the site contributes to the overall energetic and welcoming atmosphere.

Colors

I selected a color palette featuring dark blue and bordeaux (dark red) to create a compelling visual experience. The psychology of these colors plays a crucial role in shaping user perception and engagement. Dark blue evokes feelings of trust, reliability, and professionalism, which are essential for a travel service aiming to establish credibility and reassurance among users. Bordeaux, with its rich and deep hue, conveys passion, energy, and a sense of playfulness, reflecting the vibrant and dynamic nature of Berlin. The combination of these colors creates a striking contrast that is both visually appealing and emotionally resonant. Dark blue provides a calm and stable background, while bordeaux accents draw attention to key elements, creating a balanced yet dynamic aesthetic.

This blend not only enhances the overall user experience but also aligns perfectly with Berlin's reputation as a city that is both dependable and exhilarating.

Graphics

I opted for graphics that emulate the look of spray paint to resonate with the city’s dynamic street culture and creative vibrancy. These spray-painted elements evoke the raw, artistic energy of Berlin’s urban landscape, where graffiti and street art are integral to the city’s identity.

By incorporating graphics that appear as if they were sprayed onto the site, I aimed to capture the spontaneous and edgy spirit that defines Berlin. This choice not only enhances the visual appeal but also immerses users in the city’s lively atmosphere, making the website feel as vibrant and authentic as the streets of Berlin themselves. The use of these graphics ensures that the website stands out with a unique character, reflecting the creativity and cultural depth that Berlin embodies.

Icons

For the redesign of the website, I chose icons with clear, precise outlines to ensure that each element conveys its meaning with utmost clarity. These meticulously designed icons not only enhance visual communication but also improve overall user experience by providing intuitive navigation cues. The clean lines and distinct shapes make the icons easily recognizable and functional, guiding users seamlessly through the content.

This attention to detail in iconography helps to eliminate ambiguity, allowing users to quickly understand the purpose of each feature or section, thereby facilitating a more efficient and enjoyable browsing experience. The strategic use of well-defined icons underscores the CityVentura website’s commitment to clarity and user-centric design, making the interface both accessible and engaging.

In contrast, low-quality images can appear blurry or pixelated, undermining credibility and detracting from the overall user experience. By investing in top-notch imagery, the CityVentura website not only showcases its content in the best possible light but also reinforces its commitment to quality, making a memorable impression on users and encouraging deeper engagement with the brand.

The redesigned website is a testament to how empathy and creativity can transform a mundane and unattractive interface into a captivating digital experience. Users are now greeted with a vibrant, visually appealing platform that not only facilitates easy navigation but also immerses them in the cultural richness of Berlin. The new cohesive design elements work together to provide a seamless and engaging experience, making it easier for travelers to choose the perfect travel package for their needs. By aligning the website’s visual identity with Berlin’s unique character, I created an online presence that is both memorable and effective, truly reflecting the dynamic spirit of the city.
